A body found in rugged terrain in Tararua Forest Park is believed to be that of a hunter, who was last seen alive six days ago.

Manawatu police appealed for sightings of Tony Winslade, who left Palmerston North to go hunting on Sunday morning, yesterday.

Search and rescue incident controller Constable Mark Gilberd, says said a search party found a body this morning near Mount Hector, which was believed to be that of the missing 42 year old.

His backpack and rifle were earlier found at Kime Hut.

Mr Gilberd said a recovery mission was underway with the help of the Air Force, but it was very difficult due to the rough terrain and poor weather.
