The Wanganui District Council has done an about-turn and decided to apply to have the 'H' included in the spelling of its name.
At a meeting this afternoon the council voted to request that the Geographic Board change the spelling of the district to include the 'H' - it would now be spelt Whanganui District Council.
A similar motion was lost 7-6 two and a half weeks ago, but today's vote won 10-4.
Councillor Helen Craig, who initially voted against the 'H', put it back on the agenda at council meeting today.
"This dispute has been going on for over 100 years in Whanganui, and it was absolutely time it needed to be resolved.
"I think the world has moved on and when you look at indigenous peoples around the world we are learning to respect them."
