Police have named the 31-year-old man who died following an altercation at a house in the Bay of Plenty town of Kawerau, last night.
They said Barry Junior Hunt suffered a severe head injury when hit with an axe during an altercation between a small group of men at a house in the Eastern Bay of Plenty town.
He was was taken to Whakatane Hospital in a critical condition but died in the early hours of this morning.
A 25-year-old man was charged with murder and will appear in the Whakatane District Court today.
