Five people have been rescued from near the Aratiatia power station on the Waikato River.
Three were rescued from a rock in the middle of the river and two managed to get ashore by themselves and were rescued from bush further downstream.
Police were alerted just after 2pm to reports of people calling for help.
One woman had to be taken to Aratiatia by police to be checked out by ambulance staff.
Officers said, at this stage, it was unclear how the five people came to be in the river.
