Prison carpark exercise turns up drugs

11:17 am on 1 September 2010

A training exercise with drug dog handlers in a prison carpark has led to the arrest of two women following the discovery of cannabis, methamphetamine and ammunition in a car.

The women had gone to Auckland Region Women's Prison to give a friend a ride home after being told by her lawyer that she had been granted bail.

The prison's assistant regional manager, Vicki Muir, says staff who taking part in a drug dog training exercise put their newly-learned skills to use when they found cannabis, methamphetamine and gun ammunition inside the car.

Ms Muir says she imagines the women are unhappy with their friend's lawyer, because their friend was not being released that day.
