More than 1000 submissions have been received on a proposed housing development at a secluded Coromandel beach.
Most of the submissions are opposed to the subdivision planned near New Chums Beach in Wainuiototo Bay on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula.
The development would put 20 houses on lifestyle sections ranging in size from medium to large.
Since publicly notifying the project, the Thames-Coromandel District Council has received 1049 submissions. Just seven submissions support the development.
Those opposed include local tourism agencies, nearby landowners, iwi members and some people overseas who have links to the area.
In 2006 a British newspaper included New Chums Beach in a list of its top 20 secluded beaches.
Labour Party leader Phil Goff says the area is not an ordinary piece of coastline, but a superb piece of untouched New Zealand.
He believes it should be preserved for future generations as once lost, it will be lost for ever.
Mr Goff says there has been development right down the Coromandel coast and it is not too much to ask that this remnant be protected.
