Powerco says a fault on a 33,000 volt line supplying a substation has cut power to 6000 customers in Whangamata.
The fault happened at about 10.30am on Tuesday.
Another 3000 customers have lost power across Coromandel Peninsula, Manawatu, Whanganui, Taranaki, Wairarapa and western Bay of Plenty.
Powerco says prolonged stormy weather has caused multiple faults, including blown fuses and damaged lines.
