Trampers stranded in Arthur's Pass National Park

Several trampers were stranded in Arthur's Pass National Park overnight by rising rivers.

A Westpac Rescue helicopter was dispatched on Sunday to search for two women swept away while trying to cross the Mingha River, which was in full flood.

They separately managed to get out of the water.

The Department of Conservation says several other trampers are stuck at huts throughout the park waiting for the river levels to drop.

DoC says it is likely that river levels will fall enough on Monday to allow them to walk out.

Snow was forecast for the alpine passes overnight.
