Mystery of placentas in creekbed cleared up

3:46 pm on 18 October 2010

The mystery of the two placentas found near Raglan last week has been cleared up.

The placentas were found in a creekbed in Te Toto Gorge, south-west of Raglan, and police were concerned about the well-being of the mother or mothers.

They now say a woman has contacted them and explained that the placentas had been stored for several years.

By chance, police say, in disposing of them the woman had selected an area of historical relevance to local Maori - and the fact that method of disposal was not in keeping with Maori cultural protocols had added to their concerns.

They say they are pleased the matter has been resolved in such a timely and positive way.
