Trust 'can spend taxpayer funds properly'

The chairperson of a trust under investigation by police says it is confident it can safely handle taxpayer money to provide family support services.

Police say they are investigating a complaint involving the Taeaomanino Trust and the misappropriation of funds.

It is not the first time the trust or board members have been scrutinized, including in a government-commissioned report by accounting firm Deloitte.

However, Taeaomanino's chairperson, Liz Tanielu, says the trust is fit to handle a recently awarded contract to provide services through the Government's Whanau Ora programme.

She says the trust has rigorous financial systems in place.
