Trio defend unlawful assembly charges

Three men appeared in Christchurch District Court on Thursday defending charges of unlawful assembly.

The charges relate to a gathering of cars on the on-ramp of the Christchurch northern motorway in July.

Evidence was heard that about 20 vehicles were parked on the grass verge of the on-ramp and up to 40 people were gathered in groups outside.

According to witnesses, the vehicles were doing wheelies and racing each other, and those present were drinking alcohol.

The three men are part of a group fo 28 people who have been charged with unlawful assembly.

Twelve have pleaded guilty and the remaining 16 are defending the charges.
