A 36-year-old man was to appear in the Blenheim District Court on Monday accused of attacking a police officer and his dog, as well as cars, with a wooden stake.
The incident occured on SH 1 at Grovetown about 2am on Sunday.
Police say a truck driver intervened to help the wounded officer, handcuffing the man.
The police dog handler had been responding to complaints from motorists, who said a man had jumped out into the highway, hitting their cars with a large stake.
A beneficiary has been charged with assault with intent to injure, and wilful damage.
