A total fire ban covers all of Southland and parts of the Clutha District.
The ban on open fires, and suspension of all existing fire permits, takes effect from 8am on 18 December.
It also applies in Invercargill and in townships within the Southland and Gore districts.
The only exception to the ban is for gas barbecues and cookers in properly constructed containers.
