A teenager has been seriously injured in a water ski crash near Rotorua.

A rescue helicopter was called to Lake Rotoma about midday on Sunday after the 15-year-old girl fell while racing.

The Water Ski Racing Association says there were no other boats near her at the time and the race was stopped immediately.

Association president David Strong said a paramedic was with the girl within seconds and decided that airlifting her to Rotorua Hospital was the best course of action.

He said the 15-year-old was undergoing an MRI scan at Rotorua Hospital, and may have a broken collar bone.
