The new head of Capital & Coast District Health Board is confident she can address the board's financial pressures without undermining patient care.

Mary Bonner currently heads Townsville Health District in Queensland and starts as chief executive at the DHB in Wellington at the end of March.

She says she is not fazed by a budgeted deficit for this year of $48 million, stemming in large part from the construction of the new Wellington regional hospital.
