Protesters determined to save art deco houses

Protesters trying to save three art deco houses in the Auckland suburb of St Heliers say they are willing to do anything it takes to stop them being demolished.

The 1930s buildings are due to be removed to make way for a retail centre but opponents say it will ruin the character of the village.

Demolition was suspended in December last year, but Auckland Mayor Len Brown said on Monday it would cost too much for the council to buy the land.

Protester Sally Hughes says the developer visited the site on Tuesday night, escorted by police and told them the fight was over.

But Ms Hughes says his words have only hardened their resolve.

Demolition crews were at the site on Wednesday morning but left.
