Police have begun an arson inquiry after a container with an accelerant was set alight and thrown at the walls of a Gisborne house.
Police and Fire Service were called to the suburb of Kaiti at midnight on Monday.
Police arrived first and were able to extinguish a small fire before it could take hold.
The Fire Service says there was limited damage to the property and confirmed that an accelerant had been used.
The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire and is being guarded on Tuesday.
