Phone scammers target Canterbury residents

4:02 pm on 16 February 2011

Police are warning Canterbury residents that telephone scammers are targeting the region.

They say the callers are offering refunds of tax or bank fees.

Inspector Doug Parker says the scammers have often researched their victim and have enough information about them to sound plausible.

Mr Parker says scammers are also claiming to be from genuine computer repair companies and are offering to fix computers.

He says people have been successfully conned in other parts of New Zealand and is warning residents to be wary of callers asking for personal information, passwords or bank details.
