Police investigating a Wellington homicide are trying to identify a woman they say may help them make progress in the case.

Matthew Hall's body was discovered on 15 February at his Broderick Road home in Johnsonville. Police say he had been stabbed to death.

Timothy Parlane, who police say was one of a number of people of interest interviewed in the case, died when struck by a train on 5 March.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says police want to identify all Mr Parlane's movements, so are looking for a woman known to have visited him on the night of 14 February.

Mr Thornton says police want to know the identity of the woman, and is urging her to contact police.

Police are also looking for a shoulder bag and a cellphone Mr Parlane was using the night Mr Hall was killed.
