Police say power cuts in some coastal communities near Kaikoura on Monday night were due to a fatal crash on State Highway 1.
An Oamaru man, 48, died when his truck and trailer unit carrying livestock rolled at Parikawa, north of Kaikoura, at about 8pm.
The vehicle crossed the centre line before hitting a power pole.
Police say power was to houses was out from Parikawa to Waipapa Bay.
