Police in Waikato say repeat drink drivers are putting people in danger during the holiday weekend.
The district's road policing manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, says two drivers were arrested on Friday after recording breath alcohol levels 2.5 times the legal limit.
Police say they have attended eight road crashes in Waikato since the official holiday period began on Friday, and they say driver inattention is a major contributor.
Mr Tooman says the driver of a Subaru assaulted the elderly driver of a Toyota before fleeing the scene of a collision on Cobham Drive on Saturday morning.
He says the police are hoping the rain will slow motorists down.
