A man accused of setting a spate of fires around the Wellington region last weekend has been remanded in custody for a psychiatric assessment.

The 43-year-old Porirua man, whose name is suppressed, appeared in the Lower Hutt District Court on Thursday.

He is charged with ten counts of arson and one of attempted arson.

The man's lawyer, Paul Surridge, told the court that steps were being taken to move the man to hospital for an assessment on his sanity and his fitness to plead.

He will reappear in court on 23 June.
