South Dunedin schools merger confirmed

12:21 pm on 8 July 2011

Five schools in South Dunedin are to merge into two.

Education Minister Anne Tolley announced the final decision on Friday after considering feedback from the affected schools.

Under the plan, College Street School will close at the end of this year and merge with Caversham School.

Calton Hill School also becomes part of the merged school, but gets a partial reprieve - it will remain open as a satellite campus.

In a separate merger, Forbury School will close and merge with Macandrew Intermediate to form a full primary school teaching children from years one to eight.

The minister says the changes are needed because of declining rolls at the five schools.

The schools will get $1.8 million to help with the change.
