Clothing and footwear believed to belong to a missing man was found on the bank of the Waikato River during a search on Wednesday.
Nicholas Atkins, who is known as Tommy, left home after telling his partner he was going out.
A Hamilton police spokesperson says the clothing and footwear was found on the river bank, and in the water, on Wednesday.
The rescue boat went out late that afternoon but was unable to locate anything.
The boat was going out again on Thursday and teams were resuming a land search.
The spokesperson says police are keeping an open mind about where the 35-year-old might be.
