Man accused of bludgeoning seals granted bail

4:39 pm on 8 August 2011

A man charged with bludgeoning 25 seals to death in Kaikoura has been granted bail.

Jamaal Large, 36, of the Wairau Valley, entered no plea when he appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday.

His co-accused Jason Godiff, aged 19, admitted the same charges in court in July.

The fur seals, some just a few days old, were beaten to death with a pole in December last year in what the Conservation Department described as a callous and cowardly attack.

Mr Large will reappear in court on 22 August.
