Workers still in hospital following electric shock in Mt Eden

Two men remain in Middlemore Hospital after receiving electric shocks while putting up a flagpole in Auckland on Friday.

They were seriously injured when a flagpole they were putting up came into contact with overhead power lines in Mt Eden.

One man is in intensive care in a serious but stable condition and the other man is in the hospital's burns unit in a stable condition.

Police say the men, aged in their 40s, were working on the back of a small truck when the flagpole touched the wires about 2pm.

Both sustained a severe electric shock from the 11,000-volt lines. A third worker, who was in the truck at the time, escaped without injury.

Witnesses told Radio New Zealand News there were flames and arcs of electricity as the metal flagpole made contact.

They say one man ended up on the road and appeared to stop breathing, while another was on fire.

Police say people passing by performed CPR on the men before emergency services arrived.

The Department of Labour is investigating.
