Woman struck by West Auckland train dies

7:14 pm on 8 September 2011

Police now say a person killed when struck by a train in west Auckland on Thursday was not a child as earlier reported.

They say the identity has not been confirmed but the body is that of a middle-aged female.

Police said the incident did not take place on a level crossing as earlier reported, but about 150 metres away along the track.

The matter is being referred to the coroner.

Auckland Transport says western-bound trains between Morningside and Avondale were suspended while police investigated.

Eastern-bound services were affected but are now operating normally on Thursday evening.

Viola Transport, which runs Auckland's train service, will not comment on the incident and put on extra buses to replace the trains.
