Free whooping cough vaccine available for adults

A free whooping cough vaccine will be available to some adults on the West Coast following an outbreak of the illness in the area.

Some 201 suspected cases of pertussis were reported from May to the end of September this year and 90 have been confirmed.

West Coast Medical Officer of Health Cheryl Brunton says the outbreak is centred in the Westland district and is mostly affecting children.

Dr Brunton says health care and early childhood workers, as well as parents of children aged under six months, will be able to get the booster vaccine at their GP.

Immunity disappears as people get older, so adults who were immunised can still catch the disease, she warns.
