Council bails out Downstage

Wellington City Council has approved a request by Downstage theatre for a $90,000 bailout.

On Wednesday evening councillors voted unanimously to support the struggling theatre's bid for funding to carry it through to the New Year.

That interim funding means Downstage will receive $650,000 in the next two years from Creative New Zealand.

It already gets $33,000 a year from the council, and will be applying for more funding next year.

In September Downstage scrapped three shows because of a lack of money due to low audience numbers.

The theatre has to produce a business plan by the end of this year for the council.
