Two adult Gray's beaked whales that beached with a stranded calf near Tauranga have been refloated.

The Department of Conservation says the three whales stranded on Papamoa Beach. The juvenile died.

DoC spokesperson Katrina Knill says the cause of the strandings is yet to be determined. There is no evidence of oil on the whales, she says, but a post-mortem will be done on the calf.
