Whale postmortem result awaited

A postmortem on a baby whale which died on Papamoa beach, near the stranded container ship Rena is being performed on Saturday.

But the Department of Conservation says it could be weeks before the results come through.

Three Grays beaked whales stranded on the beach on Friday, but only the two adults were successfully refloated.

DoC says it's unlikely the oil and pollution from the Rena caused the whale's death, but test results will determine whether or not that is the case.
