Picton job losses tipped if alternative goes ahead

Official papers show jobs would be lost in Marlborough if ferries stop calling at Picton.

The Government is currently investigating whether a ferry terminal should be built at nearby Clifford Bay.

Ministry of Transport documents say there would be a direct reduction in employment at Picton from reduced port activity, if ferry operations moved to Clifford Bay.

There would also be employment impacts in the wider region resulting from reduced traffic passing through Picton.

Le Cafe owner Peter Schorni says Picton would be hit hard if ferries stopped coming.

Cafe Cortado Restaurant manager Diogo Alameida also says he's also worried about business drying up.

The Government has given no time frame for when a decision will be made on Clifford Bay.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says that whatever the Government decides will give the region some certainty.
