Police in the Bay of Plenty say they have found the body of a man near a vehicle linked to a shooting in Tokoroa on Saturday.

A 36-year-old woman was shot outside the town's police station following a domestic dispute just before midday.

Police had been searching for a 32-year-old man they named as Jamie David Ginns in connection with the shooting.

Detective Inspector Tim Anderson says members of the armed offenders squad found a man's body in the Mamuku forest, near Tokoroa, at about 7.30pm.

Next of kin are being informed, and then the name of the deceased is likely to be released.

The woman has had surgery and remains in Waikato Hospital in a critical condition, after being airlifted there from Tokoroa Hospital.

Police say investigations into the events surrounding the shooting will continue on Sunday.
