Heavy rains ease across North Island

3:52 pm on 18 December 2011

The MetService has lifted its severe weather warning for Taranaki as the torrential rain that has been deluging the region eases.

The downpour caused flash floods and some people had to be evacuated at Oakura motor camp after a large slip pushed baches off their foundations.

Slips were also blocking Egmont and Okau roads near New Plymouth.

Police said a 30-metre stretch of the southbound lane of State Highway 45 was blocked by surface flooding.

Rain eases in Waikato/Western Bay of Plenty

MetService says heavy rain in Waikato and the western Bay of Plenty is easing.

The two regions had been subject to a severe weather watch for isolated thunderstorm carried by a low pressure system.

MetService says the heaviest falls are now over but a further 20 to 30 mms is possible in some places overnight.
