Police in Hamilton say they are alarmed by the number of very young children being exposed to the dangers of drug manufacturing.

On Thursday, a young child was found at a Whatawhata Road property at the time of an explosion thought to have been caused by a man preparing a batch of cannabis oil.

Police say the latest incident comes just two weeks ago after a methamphetamine operation where they found a mother under the influence of P breastfeeding a child.

They also found two other children with drug residue in their hair.

Waikato police communications manager Andrew McAlley says young children should not be exposed to explosions or chemical poisoning, and family members need to do something about it.
