A 53-year-old man has drowned while snorkelling near the Marlborough Sounds.
Police say the Christchurch man, who was on holiday, became tangled in kelp about 20 metres from the shore in Te Awaiti Bay about 7pm on Sunday.
They say a family member tried to help the man but was unable to save him.
The man's name will not be released until all family members have been contacted.
