A power cut in Christchurch affected 7000 houses in the suburbs of Dallington and Burwood on Monday morning.
Orion says the power failure happened at the Dallington substation shortly after 7am. It was about an hour before power was restored at about 8.15am.
The company says the outage was not caused by any earthquakes and may have been a bird strike.
