Fire crews to remain at scene of large scrub fire

9:37 pm on 14 January 2012

Fire crews will remain at the scene of a large scrub fire, north of Auckland, that broke out late on Saturday, in case it flares up again.

Two helicopters and four appliances were called to the scene of the blaze on South Head, near the Kaipara Harbour entrance, which started just before 3pm.

A fire service spokesperson says the fire was mostly out by 7pm, but there is a chance it will re-ignite in strong winds that are forecast.

It's not yet known what caused the blaze.
