Swimmer still missing at Titahi Bay

A swimmer who was part of a group caught in a rip at Titahi Bay, north of Wellington, is still missing.

The swimmer, believed to be a man in his 20s, was caught in the rip at about 4pm on Saturday.

The rest of the group of up to five people were all rescued.

Police and emergency services searched the area, but had found no sign of him by nightfall.

In other incidents, a man drowned and another is in a serious condition in hospital following a fishing mishap in Bay of Plenty on Saturday.

Tauranga police say the incident happened in the estuary near Tye Park at Welcome Bay just before 2pm.

And a 50-year-old man drowned at about 2.30pm in Taupo during a swimming competition.
