A man has died after he was attacked by a swarm of wasps in the Marlborough Sounds.
The ambulance service says the 62-year-old man was felling trees at Black Rock in Kenepuru Sound on Saturday morning, when he stepped on a wasp nest.
A rescue helicopter was dispatched from Wellington but had to turn back due to bad weather.
Paramedics from Blenheim were taken to the scene by the Picton Coast Guard but the man had died by the time they arrived at 11.30am.
