The Rescue Coordination Centre has called off a search for a boatie in the Bay of Plenty.
Richard Rusbatch, 56, was reported missing on Tuesday morning when his yacht, the Honfleur, was found with its motor running near Mayor Island.
Extensive aerial, land and water searches have failed to find any trace of him.
Search coordinator Dave Wilson says it has now gone beyond the point where Mr Rusbatch could reasonably be expected to be found alive.
However, the search could be resumed if any new information comes to light.
Police believe the yacht left Tauranga for Paihia on Sunday. It was found with the engine running and part of the anchor in the water. A dinghy was also found.
