No Rena containers moved for a week

Maritime New Zealand says no containers have been removed from a stricken cargo ship off Tauranga for over a week due to bad weather.

So far, 167 containers have been removed from the Rena which ran aground on Astrolabe Reef, 12 nautical miles off Tauranga, on 5 October.

There are 1100 containers aboard with more than 800 secured below deck.

The crane barge Smit Borneo left the Port of Tauranga on Thursday to take station beside the wreck.

Maritime New Zealand says a little more oil has leaked from the ship due to high swells and variable winds.

The agency says a reasonably significant amount of oil is still out of the reach of salvors.
