Two high profile All Blacks will be out of action when New Zealand plays its final pool match against Canada at the Rugby World Cup on Sunday.
First five eighth Dan Carter received a groin injury during kicking practice at a training session in Wellington on Saturday afternoon.
He was set to captain for the first time, following Richie McCaw's decision not to face the Canadians with his ongoing foot injury.
Colin Slade replaces Carter, Andy Ellis comes onto the reserves bench and hooker Andrew Hore will now take over the captaincy for the first time.
The All Blacks say Carter will be further assessed on Saturday evening with an update on his condition expected on Sunday.
McCaw out because of foot complaint
Richie McCaw was forced out of the match against Canada because of an ongoing foot complaint.
McCaw says he regularly has to manage pain that stems from having surgery on his foot at the beginning of the year.
"Whenever you have bits of metal put in your foot there's a possibility of having these things," he says.
McCaw says he could have played, but that may have put back his preparations for the quarter-finals.
He has no doubts that he will play the rest of the tournament.
McCaw's place on the openside on Sunday will be taken by Victor Vito.
As the top qualifier in Pool A, the All Blacks have already booked their place in the quarterfinals.
