Wattie's started canning asparagus on Thursday morning.
The fruit and vegetable processor plans to produce almost 700,000 cans of asparagus spears this year, depending on the weather.
Wattie's says there appears to be a resurgence of people eating asparagus and it hopes for a much better season this year, after cold wet weather for the last two years.
