PSA management plan approved

12:15 pm on 15 May 2013

Abandoned kiwifruit orchards can be chopped down under a national pest management plan approved by the Government to help control the PSA bacterial disease.

The plan places Kiwifruit Vine Health (KVH) in charge of managing the disease.

Growers will pay a levy of 1 cent per tray of green kiwifruit, and 2 cents per tray of gold kiwifruit to help fund KVH's work.

KVH president Peter Ombler says the plan will largely allow KVH to continue the work it has been doing to manage PSA by maintaining exclusion, containment and recovery areas.

He says it also gives it the authority to chop down abandoned orchards.

"You can imagine if you are an orchardist right next door and you've got an abandoned orchard that is heavily infected with PSA, it does have a dramatic effect on your potential to recover and manage your way through it yourself."

Mr Ombler says KVH is aware of some abandoned kiwifruit orchards it will deal to immediately when the plan comes into effect on Friday.
