Kiwifruit growers agree safety when spraying crops a must

The kiwifruit industry is acknowledging the need for tougher penalties for growers and contractors who fail to adhere to safety guidelines when spraying crops.

A group of about 30 residents from Te Puke staged a peaceful protest outside the Mt Maunganui office of export marketer Zespri this week.

They were complaining about the drift of spray which has been linked to respiratory problems, headaches, nausea and skin rashes.

Talks took place involving Zespri, industry group Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated, Maori growers and residents' representatives.

Kiwifruit Growers president Peter Ombler says concerns were raised regarding compliance with best practice techniques and advance notice of spraying.

He says the meeting was productive and gave focus to those areas of concern.
