Keep 2-stroke engines - recreational fishers

4:09 pm on 17 August 2008

The Recreational Fishing Council says it opposes any attempt to ban 2-stroke engines because of their environmental impact.

An Australian marine engine wholesaler has been lobbying the Government, marine industry representatives and others attending a presentation in Auckland on Friday.

The company, Bombardier, wants a ban on importing 2-stroke engines in favour of low emission 4-stroke engines.

But Keith Ingram, from the Recreational Fishing Council, says most boaties are probably only on the water for about 250 hours a year, and are not solely to blame for environmental problems.

The Government says there is no move to join the growing global trend of banning 2-stroke engines.
