More cold, wet weather on the way

Farm advisors are warning rural areas in the central South Island that they are not yet in the clear: more cold, wet weather is on the way.

Widespread damage and power cuts were caused by gales on Tuesday night. Many properties in the Canterbury foothills are still without electricity.

Federated Farmers said farmers have taken a huge hit and access to water is becoming a big concern.

The cold snap will be in the middle of lambing.

''Hopefully it will be quick so any snow that falls won't hang around too long,'' said spokesperson Katie Milne.
