Beef farming representatives want all-embracing trade deal

Beef farming representatives from five countries in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade negotiations have thrown their wish list into the ring.

The Five Nations Beef Alliance, representing Australia Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States, has joined Fonterra, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and US farming groups in calling for a comprehensive trade deal without any sectors being excluded.

It wants all tariffs and other market access barriers eliminated in the TPP region.

The alliance also wants the negotiating countries to push for arrangements where beef producers are all treated the same.

Beef + Lamb chairman-elect James Parsons said any reduction in trade barriers will increase farm profits because tarffs are indirectly costing New Zealand farmers $115 per head of cattle exported in the beef trade.
