[b The grower of a potato tomato hybrid says interest in the new plant has far exceeded expectations and believes the plant is likely to be exported.

The Potato Tom grown by Tharfield Nursery in Bay of Plenty is a grafted tomato and potato in one, producing first tomatoes and then potatoes later in the season.

Andrew Boylen from Tharfield Nurseries says demand for the plant has been phenomenal and they haven't been able to keep up.

Mr Boylen says a grower in the United Kingdom has brought out a similar plant called a Tomtato, but that won't deter them from exporting the Potato-Tom.

There are plans to export to Australia next year.
